Tamarack decoy

A unique tradition in James Bay Cree culture. The decoys have been created for lures, through centuries ,to attract Canada Geese in their spring and fall migration when the Crees were living in a nomadic mode for their survival. Canada goose has been the only reliable source of food for the Cree Nation and for this reason, it is a sacred bird that is celebrated year after year at Goose Break,  during the spring migration of May.The tamarack decoys were made to simulate life size Geese and today,in Waskaganish,a Eeyou-Istchee community , a family perpetuates the tradition by making different styles and sizes of tamarack decoys to decorate and spread the scent of the branches in your home. This model shows you that the opening in the head of your decoy was efficient when the life size decoys were placed on the white snow and ice of James Bay. Canada geese were flying and recognized their peers with the big white spot they have around the eyes.
