CARIBOU ANTLER INUKSHUK NECKLACE

Made by Sandy Maniapik,Inuk from Pangnirtung,Baffin Island,Nunavut, this pendant attached to a sterling silver chain,is amazingly polished and delicately carved in caribou antler. The inukshuk is the best example of Inuit peoples ingeniosity to find their way in the arctic toundra for centuries.According to the location and the shape ,it gives information on shallow river crossing, landmarks between two communities or camps, fertile ground for caribou hunts, spawning place for trout or salmon  fishing,etc...In inuktitut ,inuk means man ,inukshuk means looks like a man .The Inuit are just piling stones to erect them in a northern latitude where you can't find any tree. It's a from of language.a spiritual guide for survival that only the Inuit could read as we do for reading road maps.
